This may come as a surprise to some, but this spice that you probably already have at home may have some beneficial effects when it comes to lowering blood sugar.
One three-month study saw a 14% decrease in blood sugar levels when participants took 360mg of cinnamon twice a day.
Chromium is an essential mineral that may improve insulin sensitivity, as well as carbohydrate metabolism.
In a meta-study of 25 different studies, it was found that including a chromium supplement reduced fasting blood sugar levels in patients with type 2 diabetes by roughly 21mg/dl compared with a placebo.

This bitter tasting compound comes from the roots and stems of certain plants.

Across 27 studies of type 2 diabetes patients taking a berberine supplement, fasting blood glucose dropped 15.5mg/dl when compared to the control group.
5. Aloe Vera
This plant is not just good for sunburns, it may be good for lowering blood sugar as well!
It is thought that aloe vera works by actually stimulating additional insulin production in the body, but more research needs to be done to confirm this claim.
However it works, aloe vera has shown positive results in scientific studies, lowering blood sugar levels by 46.6mg/dl in just 4-14 weeks.

6. Gymnema Extract
A popular herb in India, Gymnema's hindu name literally translates to "sugar destroyer."
A long term study on this plant showed that a daily dose of 400mg reduced blood sugar levels in diabetic patients by 29% after 18-20 months.
It is thought that this Gymnema may reduces sugar absorption in the gut, and increase cells ability to take in sugar from the blood.
It is also thought that Gymnema extract may reduce sugar cravings.

7. American Ginseng
Last but not least on our list is American Ginseng, which has been shown to reduce post-meal blood sugar levels by roughly 20% in both healthy adults as well as those with type 2 diabetes.

It is often taken before meals as a way to keep blood sugar levels from spiking.
