Life hacks for better health

4 Simple Tricks For Better Health

With the new year right around the corner, better health is on everyone's mind.

Whether it be to drop some pounds, lower blood sugar, get off medication, or simply just feel healthier, fitness and wellness are some of the biggest goals we all have for ourselves.

Despite our ambitions, however, most people don't follow through, and make the same resolutions each year, hoping that somehow they'll get different results this time around.

We want this year to be different, so in honor of 2020, here are FOUR hacks that are simple yet effective in helping you to achieve better health.

Health Hack #1: Stop doing boring exercise!

Each January gyms around the country gear up for the flood of new signups that come through their doors hoping to get in shape. Yet by February nearly all of those people have quit.

The reason so few people stick with their new years gym plan is that most people find the gym incredibly boring!

Think about it - would you rather watch a boring show or a fun show?

Would you rather read a boring book or a fun book?

Would you rather go on a boring vacation or a fun vacation?

You'd choose fun every time!

So why should exercise be any different?

Too many people think that exercise means getting on the treadmill or lifting weights, which are two activities that most people don't enjoy.

The truth is that there are tons of super fun activities that are great exercise, and that you wouldn't need to "force" yourself to go do.

Here are just a few examples of exercise that you may find fun:

  • Dancing
  • Hiking
  • Biking
  • Surfing
  • Skiing
  • Boxing
  • Tennis
  • Yoga

There are so many fun activities that you can choose from. So don't force yourself to do exercise that you don't enjoy. Instead pick something that you are excited to do, and you'll be far more likely to do it regularly.

Hack #2: Make eating healthy convenient, and eating unhealthy inconvenient.

Convenience can be your best friend or your enemy.

If you have a gym in your house and a personal trainer knocking at your door, that's convenience, and you'll be way more likely to exercise.

But if you have a bunch of chips and soda in your pantry, that is also convenience, and you'll be way more likely to consume a lot of extra calories throughout the day.

One of the easiest ways to start eating healthier is simply to make a grocery list while you're at home and after you've just eaten.

Once you get to the grocery store, don't be tempted by the bag of chips on the shelf or candy at the checkout isle.

Stick to your list, and fill your pantry with healthy foods and snacks.

Make it convenient to eat healthy and watch how fast your health can change.

Hack #3: Get somebody else to keep you accountable.

This is a super underused strategy that works incredibly well!

Odds are you know other people who also have some health or fitness goals that they'd like to achieve in the new year.

So rather than relying on willpower, use the power of peer pressure to help you achieve your goals.

Here is how it works: contact somebody else, tell them your health or fitness goal as well as what actions you will take each day or week in order to achieve them, and ask that your friend helps keep you accountable.

Then, agree to check in every day or week (a quick text message is plenty) to let them know you've completed your daily or weekly assignment.

Usually this is enough to make you stick with your goals.

However, if you think you still might be at risk to not follow through, you can create consequences for yourself. Some examples could be: if you don't do your daily or weekly workout, you owe your friend $20. If you miss your goals again, you have to take your friend out to dinner. If it happens a third time you have to shave your head. Have fun with it!
